St. Joseph’s Keeseville Outpatient Counselor, Harry Roscoe, first met St. Joseph’s Certified Recovery Peer Advocate, James Bornemann while both were volunteering with residents of St. Joseph’s Col. C. David Merkel Veterans Residence.
Harry is a combat Marine who served in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, while James is an Army combat Veteran who fought in Iraq.
“We worked together to help the residents get back to life. We helped them achieve their goals in early recovery by linking them back with the outdoors, sports, and physical activity,”Harry shares.
Another common interest is football. “We played together in the Turkey Bowl, a charity event over Thanksgiving,” James says. “That’s when Harry asked if I’d like to come up to Plattsburgh and try out for the North Stars.
The Plattsburgh North Stars is a not-for-profit adult amateur minor-league football club, and is a member of the Empire Football League, which has been operating as a semi-professional football league since 1969.
Harry will be marking his first year with St. Joseph’s as a Primary Counselor this month, while James began with us this past April.
As James explains, “I’ll be a Peer Advocate with the new St. Joseph’s Open Access Center and will be there when a person arrives for treatment and will provide support and assistance for them all the way through until aftercare.”
And while this is the first season with the North Stars for James, who plays as a Defensive Linebacker, Quarterback Harry has been with the team since 2010 and played with them when the North Stars won the national title in 2014. He was named Most Valuable Player in 2018.
While the North Stars have provided a stepping stone to the NFL for some, James says he’s with them for comradeship and, “For the love of the game.”
The North Stars will paly ten regular-season games, with their pre-season opener taking place on June 22 against the Vermont Southern Storm. Home Games will be played at Melissa L Penfield Park, 139 Boynton Ave, in Plattsburgh.
All in the St. Joseph’s community are invited to attend the games and support Harry, James, and the rest of the North Stars.
